First of all, thank you lots for Commentics!
Now, I'd like to cut the cord to Google APIs and host the AJAX scripts locally. Any idea of how I would I go about doing this?

I was afraid something would "break" in the transition, but it worked like a charm! I'd like to suggest making this an option out-of-the-box for users, as it's so easy to do and it cuts down on the re-working that may otherwise be needed upon an upgrade.
I never like plugging into remote APIs for basic functionality. It wouldn't be the first time Google or others cut off access to their older APIs. There's the tracking issue, also.

You should also massage the entries in /upload/admin/index.php
