Trouble with adding code to .htaccess

Hi...made it through the installation.

I've having trouble with integration. When I add "AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .html .htm .shtml" to my .htaccess file, I get the following error when loading my home page

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/feo1966/public_html/index.shtml on line 1

Any ideas?

Can you post the first few lines of index.shtml?
