Going to answer my own question as figured it out - so maybe helpful to others.

Downloaded the Extractor Extension and modded the code -- easy enough to figure out!

Also answered my second question which would have been how to post latest comments on index page (ie away from the comments pages) - also modded Extractor Extension.

Draft version on home page of my site if anyone wants to see a demo.
