thank you for your time, the only other problem i am having is that I have checked the setting enable user rating in the comments layout but individual user ratings are not showing with the comment.
eg

So you have the 'Rating' setting in 'Settings -> Layout -> Comments' enabled?
Does the comment show a rating if you go to 'Manage -> Comments'?

no it doesn't show there either. yes it is checked enabled on settings layout comments thanks

So it is, sorry my testing was at fault and the rating wasn't added at the same time as the comment was posted. my oversight. sorry to take up more of your time.. all working beautifully. thank you for your help.
